Trader helps nab net banking fraudsters

Police arrest six members of gang, to investigate how accused gained password to siphon off money from businessman’s account

A businessman from whose bank account fraudsters had siphoned off money using net banking, succeeded in helping the cops bust a gang and arresting six of its members.

The cops first managed to arrest one of them as he was about to withdraw money from another account to which the businessman’s money had been transferred. A loan officer with a private bank was also arrested with them.

A few days ago, Ajay Sharma got a shock when he realised that Rs 1.67 lakh from his account was transferred using net banking.

“Thereafter, I found an additional sum of Rs 2.60 lakh which had been fraudulently deposited in my account, was also siphoned off to the same account where my own money had been transferred,” said Sharma, who is managing director of Karan Marking, a firm that deals in bar code printers and scanners.

He immediately approached the ICICI Bank branch in Tardeo and told them about the unusual transactions. “They managed to track the account to which the money was transferred to a Standard Chartered Bank in Borivali. Armed with the account number of the Borivali bank, I approached the Tardeo police for help,” said Sharma, whose office is at Tardeo.

The Borivali police were alerted and they managed to nab a person who came to withdraw money from the account.

“The person was detained following which I made a complaint with the cyber crime cell as instructed by the Tardeo police. As my ICICI account was opened at the Cuffe Parade branch, the cyber crime cell, in turn, directed me to lodge a complaint (FIR 144/08) at Cuffe Parade police station, after which the accused was formally arrested,” said Sharma.

The arrested person has been identified as Satya Prakash Singh who worked as a loan officer with a private sector bank. “After interrogations we arrested four more people including one Jitendra Poojari,” said Rakesh Maria, joint commissioner of police, crime.

The police are investigating how the accused managed to get Sharma’s net password.

The cops have identified the mastermind and are confident of nabbing him soon.
